Every December I stand in front of my closet and say the same thing: I have nothing to wear for Christmas. I do, of course. I just donโt want to look like I tried too hard at my auntโs house, or like I didnโt try at all at the office party.
So this year I did something different. Instead of scrolling AI pictures and mannequin photos, I saved real Christmas outfit ideas for women that real women actually wore last holiday season. Some are from London creators who live for a festive coat. Some are from a North Carolina girl who turns every tree farm trip into a cute moment. All of them are wearable.
For each look, I tell you whatโs in the photo, where you can wear it, how to copy it with what you probably already own, and who it suits best. Letโs get you dressed.
1. A Long Red Coat and a Velvet Hair Bow

This is the easiest way to look festive without wearing a single โChristmasโ print. Sophie keeps it simple: a long red coat, her hair down, and a little red velvet bow clipped at the back. Thatโs it. The bow does all the holiday talking.
I love this for days when you are running around doing gift shopping, but you still want photos to look good.
- Wear a black or cream outfit under the coat so the red stays the star.
- Clip the bow at the back of your head, not on top. It looks more grown up.
- Match the bow to the coat, not to your lipstick.
2. A Green Tartan Dress with Red Tights

Red tights. I know they sound scary. But look at how Jadyn wears them with a green tartan dress, red shoes, a bow headband and a little basket bag. It feels cozy and old-fashioned in the best way, like a Christmas card from your grandmaโs mailbox.
The trick is that the tights pick up the red in the plaid, so nothing looks random.
๐ก My honest tip
Buy opaque tights, not sheer ones. Sheer red can look like a costume. Opaque red looks like fashion. If red feels like too much, go with burgundy tights first.
3. A Black Sequin Maxi Dress for the Fancy Party

If your holiday party invite says โdress up,โ this is your answer. A black sequin slip dress that hits the floor. Thin straps, a small black bag, and nothing else competing with it.
Black sequins feel safer than gold or silver, and they work for almost every skin tone. They also hide wine spills. Ask me how I know.
- Keep jewelry tiny. The dress already shines.
- Add a long black coat on top for the walk in.
- Pick a block heel if you will be standing for hours.
4. A Silver Sequin Mini Dress with Sheer Black Tights

Hannahโs silver sequin mini with long sleeves is pure party energy, and the sheer black tights make it work in cold weather. Long sleeves are the secret here. They make a short dress feel classy instead of โgoing clubbing.โ
This exact formula also works great if your birthday falls in winter. I put a few more ideas like this in my winter birthday outfit ideas post.
โ ๏ธ Watch out
Sequins scratch under the arms. Wear a thin slip or a soft bodysuit under it and you will thank me by 10 pm.
5. A Red Sweater and White Jeans at the Tree Farm

Picking out a real tree is my favorite day of the whole season, and this is exactly what I want to wear for it. A bright red sweater, white wide-leg jeans and white sneakers. Against all that green, the red pops in every single photo.
Yes, white jeans in winter. Totally fine. Just skip them if the farm is muddy.
- Choose a chunky knit so you can skip a heavy coat on mild days.
- Tuck the front of the sweater in a little to show your waist.
- Wear shoes you donโt mind getting a bit dirty.

6. A White Blouse with a Shiny Sequin Midi Skirt

This is the outfit I would wear on Christmas Day itself. A soft white blouse on top, a long silver sequin skirt, and pink heels. It is dressy enough for photos and still comfy enough to sit on the floor and open gifts.
A sequin skirt is a smart buy because it works three ways: with a blouse for Christmas, with a sweater for brunch, and with a black bodysuit for New Yearโs.

7. Red and Yellow Plaid Pants with a Cream Knit

Not a dress person? Same, some days. Jadyn shows how plaid pants can be the whole festive moment. She keeps the top cream and soft, adds white earmuffs and a red bag, and the outfit looks happy without trying hard.
Plaid pants are also warmer than a dress, which matters if you live anywhere with a real winter.
- Pick a top in one of the lighter colors from the plaid.
- Keep shoes simple, like loafers or white sneakers.
- Add one red accessory to tie it together.
8. A Fluffy Cream Cardigan, Tartan Scarf and Knee Boots

Coffee in hand, cafรฉ table full of flowers, and the coziest outfit. Sophie wears a fluffy cream cardigan, a tartan scarf, a short brown skirt and tall brown boots. This is what โChristmas in the cityโ looks like to me.
The scarf is the clever part. It brings in the plaid holiday feeling without a plaid outfit. If you are planning a December trip to a big city, I have a whole list of NYC winter outfits built on this same idea.
๐ Good to know
Brown and cream look softer than black for daytime. Save black for night.
9. A Sparkly Knit Maxi Dress for the Work Christmas Party

The office party is tricky. You want to look dressed up, but you also have to see these people on Monday. Hannahโs answer is a sleeveless knit maxi dress with a soft sparkle all over. It covers everything, it moves when you walk, and it still feels special.
A knit dress is also way more forgiving after the holiday buffet. Just saying.
- Add a long cardigan or blazer if the office is cold.
- Wear your hair sleek and pulled back.
- Pick shoes you can stand in for three hours.
10. A Red Striped Sweater for a Christmas Tea Date

Not every holiday plan needs sparkle. For a slow tea date with friends, Jadyn picked a red and white striped sweater that looks a little like a candy cane. Fun, sweet and totally comfy.
Stripes are a nice middle ground if you hate ugly Christmas sweaters but still want to look in the spirit. Pair it with jeans or a cream skirt.

11. Long Coats and Matching Hair Bows on Christmas Eve

Two friends, two long coats, two big bows in their hair. One coat is deep brown, the other is soft grey. Neither is red or green, and it still looks like Christmas Eve because of the bows and the lights behind them.
This is a fun one to do with your best friend or your sister. Same accessory, different outfits.
๐ก Quick tip
Choose a bow in satin or velvet and at least the size of your palm. Small bows get lost in long hair.
12. A Cream Knit and Long Sparkly Skirt for Family Photos

๐ธ Look by @mrshanbrown · UK
If you are doing family photos by the tree, look at this one. Everyone is in cream and soft white, and Hannah wears a cream knit with a long sparkly skirt. It looks put together without forcing the whole family into matching pajamas.
A shared color is the secret to good family photos. It doesnโt have to be the same outfit, just the same color family.
- Pick one color group: cream, red or green.
- Let only one person wear the sparkle.
- Keep kids in simple knits so they stay comfy.
13. A Faux Fur Jacket and White Pants for Snowy Trips

Going somewhere snowy for the holidays? Sophie wore a brown faux fur jacket with white pants and white boots on her Lapland trip, and it looks like a winter movie. The fluffy jacket keeps you warm and photographs beautifully against snow.
White on white in the snow can look washed out, so the brown jacket is what makes this work.
Christmas Outfit Questions I Get Asked a Lot
What should a woman wear on Christmas Day?
Wear something comfy that still feels special. A soft knit with a sequin or velvet skirt, or a cozy sweater dress, works well for most family plans. You will be eating and sitting a lot, so skip anything tight.
What colors are best for Christmas outfits?
Red, green, cream, burgundy, black, gold and silver all feel like Christmas. If you donโt want classic red and green, cream with one shiny piece looks festive too.
Can I wear jeans for Christmas?
Yes. Pair dark or white jeans with a red sweater, a sparkly top or a velvet blazer. Jeans work great for tree farms, holiday markets and casual family days.
How do I look festive without an ugly Christmas sweater?
Add one small holiday detail to a normal outfit. A velvet hair bow, red tights, a tartan scarf or sparkly earrings is enough.
What should I wear to a work Christmas party?
Pick something dressy but covered, like a knit maxi dress, satin pants with a nice top, or a long sleeve sequin dress with tights. Keep it fun, but office friendly.
My Last Word on Christmas Outfits
You donโt need a brand new closet for the holidays. Most of these looks are one fun piece plus things you already own. A red coat, a sequin skirt, a bow in your hair. Pick the Christmas outfit idea that fits your plans, try it on this weekend, and fix anything that pinches before the big day.
If you found a look you love, save this post to your Christmas board on Pinterest so you can find it again when December gets busy.
